Students Speak: An Anthology from Hawai'i's Youth: A Publication of the FAUW (Filipino Association of University Women)
In 1990, the Filipino Association of University Women (FAUW) published an anthology of literary works written by public school students of Filipino ancestry entitled Voices of Youth—a rare publication that gave voice to the young Filipino-Americans’ experience in Hawaii.
Their voices in their poems were crystal clear, sometimes filled with pain, at other times with humor and laughter—but always with honesty and integrity. The original anthology served as a small window to the lives of the Filipino and Filipino-American youth.
Thirty years later, the FAUW decided to reprint the anthology and added literary works written more recently by the youth of Hawai’i. Also included are the winning entries of the Letter to my Parents contest—one of the programs the FAUW initiated in 2013 in collaboration with Reiyukai America.
Pinay: Culture Bearers of the Filipino Diaspora
What happens to values and culture if Filipinos who live away from the country forget to remember them as they live out their lives? And if values were maintained, which ones would Filipinos NOT give up because they would no longer recognize themselves as a Filipino? Have traditions been important enough to transmit to their children? AND would these children even value them? From birth to death, to marriage and children, to finding identity and pride, Pinay’s women writers explore the beliefs, attitudes, practices, and rituals they drew on to deal with life’s transitions. One of the Filipino Association of University Women’s (FAUW) goals is to promote an understanding of Filipino culture. This collection of lived experiences and personal accounts of our women aims to contribute to future generations’ insights into the different aspects of a Pinay’s life in diaspora.
